In through the front door,

Run around the back,
Out through the window,
And off jumps Jack.

Youngest (8yrs) has been wanting to learn to "knit for real" for a while...no more spool knitting.  And his face lit up when I told him I'd teach him.  Within 30 minutes he was reciting a shortened version of the poem ("in the front, around back, out the window, off jumps Jack") in his head while working very seriously on his stitches.
And he was Q-U-I-E-T!  Which is saying something because he's a top-volume motor-mouth, lol!

I broke my own personal rule for buying knitting books by getting this one...as it doesn't contain very many projects that I want to make.  My saving grace is that I had a 33% off coupon.
And that cute yellow cup?  I've liked them for a veeery long time and they're now 75% off at Borders!

BUT, those little hearts on the cover had me!
And I just knew they'd make cute Christmas ornaments!

The 2010-handmade-holiday-gift-production-line has officially begun.
And those little hearts are just rolling off the line!
They are so fun and sweet...
and they make the book purchase totally worth it!

I'm doing mine with worsted weight wool and size 9 needles.
Finished size after felting; approx 3"x3"

Happy Weekend!!!

  1. I saw that book on Ann's (Beadlework) blog and the hearts just hooked me straight away! I'm trying to persuade DH to get it for me as a Christmas present, but I might have to indulge myself - the hearts you've done so far look great!

  2. Those are so adorable. I've been on a book and magazine diet too because I have so many I've not delved into yet but this might just make me cheat!

  3. Cue the music - wait, is there a song that talks about helping Santa make toys? If not, there should be!

Those hearts are SO worth the purchase price of the book!

How many do you plan to make?

I love those hearts and that gingham ribbon...oh makes me just smile!

I noticed my pumpkin set in your sidebar. I still can't believe I was so luck to receive those. I actually have them in my stitching bag on the floor beside me right this minute!

Hope you have a good weekend!!

  8. Hi Staci, how nice to see your son knitting, I taught both of my children to knit, crochet, cross stitch and to sew. I hope your son keeps it up and continues to enjoy the knitting.

  10. Oh man... Borders... Christmas... They have the *tackiest* Christmas stuff evah, and I LOVE it. I have numerous glitter raindeer (one in fuchsia glitter with a black and silver glittery feather boa) and this year they have glitter CAMELS! I want. So much. My husband might divorce me.

(oh, and the hearts you're making are cool too)

  14. Agh--isn't it hard trying to not buy books?? Good for you for giving in. You can look at it as a tool for Christmas gifts rather than a bit of stash. ;) Love the hearts. Congrats on teaching your youngest to knit!! YGG!

  18. Hi Staci,

How cute!! It's amazing to me
    how something knitted can turn
    into that fuzzy, sweet heart
    shape. Magic!!

    These would be great attached
    to Christmas parcels.

How cool that your youngest is
learning to knit and is really
    getting into it. Think he'll
    want to try cross stitching
    next???

He couldn't ask for a better
    or more experienced teacher.

    Have a great weekend Staci.

    Cheers!

  24. So cute!! My son wanted to learn how to knit - I got him some crazy rainbow yarn to make a hat and when we got home he said "Can you make it for me?" Yeah, that lasted long! Hope your son sticks with it longer than mine!! :)

    Love those hearts!! So cute!!

  25. Those are adorable!

Someone at church asked me the other day if I would teach the "young gals" there to knit. I said I would, but I have never done something like that before. Maybe I'll learn that verse and teach it that way like you did your son. It looks like he's well on his way.

  28. I LOVE anything with hearts. Might have to check out that book... Your knitting verse is great; I'll have to try that with the antepartum ladies. Thanks. Do you have any tricks for the "out the window" step? That's where most of my ladies have difficulty if they aren't particularly adept with their hands. Check out the free penguin pattern; it's a fast project!

  31. Those heart ornaments are so pretty and cute! The book was totally worth buying just for them.

Great to hear that you son is starting his knitting career. :) In no time he'll be knitting his own caps and mittens.

I love that scarf you blogged about in your previous entry. The colours is just perfect shade of red.
