Floss Ring Tag Tutorial

Several people have wondered how I make the floss ring tags, so here is my humble attempt at a tutorial. The original idea/tutorial came from Cathsotte. I've made a few changes for my own convenience :)

Floss Ring Tag materials:

1. Stitched front and back with matching backstitched borders
2. Iron-on fusible web (this helps to give it a little substance and helps prevent fraying when making the eyelet hole.)
3. 2 very thin pieces of batting the size of stitched piece or 1 thin piece
4. Glue, if desired
5. Eyelet kit (I use a very inexpensive little kit~$2.50, it comes with the setting tool and around 20 or so eyelets and you use a hammer to close the them. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby but I've seen them at Wal-Mart and Hancocks fabrics)
6. Floss ring

Step 1:
Iron fusible web onto wrong side of stitched front and back, let cool and remove paper backing. Trim excess material 3 "squares" or 6 "threads" beyond each backstitched edge. Trim corners.

Step 2:
Trim batting to fit within backstitched borders. If desired, place a small dot of glue in 2 opposite corners on front piece to keep batting from shifting...repeat for back. Be sure not to put glue where you intend to put your eyelet.

Step 3:
With wrong sides facing and tucking seams in, whipstitch front and back together through backstitched borders all the way around.

Step 4:
Decide placement of eyelet. Make a hole with a sharp pair of scissors. Enlarge hole so eyelet will fit, trimming any excess fabric and batting. Do not make hole too large!

Step 5:
Using whatever eyelet setting tool you've chosen, set eyelet. Place on floss ring.

Enjoy your new Floss Ring Tag!!!

You can check out the other tags I've made at Harmiens's blog and Vonna's blog. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. If there are problems with this tutorial, please let me know so that I can fix them. I can't wait to see your tags :)

Thank you for visiting my blog, I love your comments!!!

Great tutorial! And now I have something to use my cropodile for now that scrapbooking has taken a distant 4th in my list of favorite crafts ;-) To be honest, I'm a little wary of using eyelets with stitchy stuff but if you say so, I'll give it a try :D

Staci,

Great blog, and tutorial. I will be trying my hand at a floss ring soon. Have all the supplies. Jill (Purple Peacock) is a good stitching friend and she told me about your blog. Plus she raved about your Fair and Square exchange. Good job.

Staci,
Could you please tell us what size eyelets to purchase? Are they 1/4" ones for the bigger rings? Thanks - love your blog.
